“There are no tricks on this record - everything you hear is live…”

With a name derived from Bernard Edward’s bass guitar strings, Australian duo Flatwound launch out of the studio and into your ears with their first-class debut album released by One World Music in October. Aptly titled ‘Super Space Dope Funk’, the LP turns traditional funk on its head, blending it with elements of Disco, Hip Hop, Jazz, House, and Latin. A collaborative effort between two musical minds bent on originality, the truly international Flatwound Sound™ is created without sampling. Seal the airlock, strap yourself in and let Flatwound transport you into the cosmos.

Flatwound’s DJ and production virtuoso Jack Prest has performed on all of the biggest stages including Big Day Out, Good Vibrations, Cockatoo Island and Pyramid Rock and many of the country’s premier venues. As well as DJing with modern day funk legends Good Buddha and up and comers Horrorshow, Jack has performed alongside Public Enemy, Jungle Brothers, Mark Rae, The Herd, Koolism and TZU. Bassist/Minimoogist CJSoulman’s deep musical background has seen him playing with local and international artists such as Jermaine Jackson (USA), Al Martino (USA), Marcia Hines, ABC Orchestra, Jimmy Little, Espirito, Pashalis (Greece), Dakis (Greece), Dariush (Iran) and The Nolans (Ireland). He is a founding member of the seminal Latin Jazz group, Espirito.

3 years of late nights, homemade tzatziki and Aldi chocolate went into the writing and recording of ‘Super Space Dope Funk’. Incorporating their love of cutting edge and vintage technologies, the duo methodically ran vocals, instruments and sounds through a complex web of pedals, analogue devices and computers to create the refined sound they were searching for.

The lead single ‘Android Funk 6’, eases you down the road with a mid-tempo disco groove. The single features a massive club remix from Mailer Daemon and a slow burning late nite version. Keep an eye out for the film clip by Dead Galaxy (a.k.a. Presser from Gerling) in the coming months. Worthy of note are festival anthem ‘Again’ and the spacey nu-disco jam ‘Moon Spread’. The album’s closer ‘Our Love Will Last’ features vocalist Keren Minshull from the group Euphoria who enjoyed a number one hit in 1991 with ‘Love You Right’.

Flatwound have twice secured the #1 slot on the Triple J Unearthed Dance Chart, going on to receive rotation on community stations across Australia including support from FBi, 3RRR, Bondi FM, 2SER, 3PBS, RTR and many others. Their debut vinyl 12” ‘Tickle Me Disco’, took them global receiving international support from major tastemakers such as DCUP, Faze Action, Cosmo Vitelli and AGFA. The single debuted in the Top Ten of the Juno Funky House charts and was shortlisted for the MOS Clubbers Guide to Spring 2010.

On stage, the disco funk steam train of Flatwound is a sophisticated combination of the vintage and the bleeding edge, featuring live production and fx, electric bass, v-drums, trumpet, keys and synths. Their ability to jam and improvise enables Flatwound to make sure the dance floor is firing from start to finish. A recent addition to the Flatwound live show is Dave Marsalis, on V-Drums, who has toured with the likes of Hilltop Hoods and Scribe.

To coincide with the release of ' Super Space Dope Funk’, Flatwound will be touring Australia over the coming months.

"I'd label it Super Space Dope Funk. Funnily enough, that's the name of their album!" Dom Alessio, Triple J.

"Sooo dope. Great stuff, keep it coming I’m thirsty" DCUP (Producer of Multiple ARIA #1)

"The 'electro' movement has seen disco and house take a back seat in recent years, but the sound is coming back to the clubs now., and Flatwound will be championing this funk, sexy stomp across Australia this summer. Expect to hear a blend of filtered house, shameless disco goodness and general all-round rump-shakin' fun time boogie" Rip It Up / Onion Magazine
